Route 66:Day 7 – Too Brief in the Lone Star State

I never thought I’d say this, but our time in Texas was very pleasant. I liked Amarillo, it had a nice “rhythm” to it, and everyone we came into contact with were great. Even with our “day off”, we still didn’t get on the road until late morning. Just goes to show you the subconscious pull of the place.

The days drive was pretty straight, flat, and uneventful, ending by taking a gamble on an RV park called “Council Road RV Park” in Oklahoma City. This is the kind of RV Park that I really love; this park is like a comfortable pair of old shoes that you keep going back to, even though you have about 1/2 dozen of other shoes sitting on your shelf. The staff was so nice and friendly, even giving you a cart escort to your site (in spite of the very reasonable $25 a nite price for full hookup, and free wi-fi). The host at the desk was so considerate he made sure to move us close to the wi-fi transmitter evidently “reading” the fact that we are internet freaks. No “extras” here, such as pool, super level concrete sites, and gym, etc. But that’s OK, the price was more than right for the ambiance. It’s one of those places you could just stay, and stay, and stay. Suddenly a whole summer is gone. This may seem trivial, but with a dog, you appreciate this kind of thing. Asked if we had a dog, and I said “yes”, they said that we could walk our dog anywhere in the park, just pick-up afterwards. So reasonable, and so much better than a 6×6 fenced in “pet area” that you find at many KOA’s. Southern hospitality at its best.
