Sensitive military gear for sale online

According to a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Many pieces of military gear which were stolen have been sold on Craigslist and eBay.

Investigators posing as buyers where able to buy over a dozen items listed on the online sites, the sellers of stolen items were arrested.

The items include two F-14 fighter jet components, special night vision goggles for the military, army combat uniforms for soldiers, as well as enhanced body armor used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The report stated “A review of policies and procedures for these web sites determines that there are few safeguards to prevent the sale of sensitive and stolen defense-related items using the sites.”

eBay and Craigslist have always maintained it was impossible for them to proactively police their listings. And while the GAO criticized both sites’ policies, and said “both Web sites have an international reach,” Buckmaster Criagslist’s CEO denied that in his testimony, saying “transactions are intended to local.” Of course, “intended to be” isn’t the same as “are.”
