The ONE Campaign, Ben & Jerry’s Join Forces

You know Ben & Jerry, the two loveable old guys from the 60’s that have made ice-cream forever, and have always been active in worthy causes (why can’t we get presidents as honest and down-to-earth as these guys?). Anyway, they have just developed and dedicated one of the strangest sounding frozen concoctions you can imagine: cheesecake and brownie ice-cream.
The “dedication” is to one of the most persistent and growing problems facing the world today: world hunger. In their own words, this event was dedicated to “commemorate a joint endeavor to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease around the world”.
The partnership was announced at the Ben & Jerrys Scoop Shop in Burbank, California, and featured Ben & Jerrys Co-Founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, and David Lane, CEO and President of the ONE Campaign. The event also featured longtime ONE members DAUGHTRY and a performance by the African Childrens Choir.

The event shown on the video featured a speech by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerrys. Were glad to be supporting ONE.org as they lead the charge in the fight against global poverty”, Ben stated.

World hunger is a current, and unfortunately growing problem (see “Biofuels a Disaster?“), and the money drain of the Iraq war on our tax dollars certainly isn’t helping. As Ben put it, “for 2 months worth of what we spend on the war in Iraq, we could feed all 3 million kids in the world that are dying of starvation”. Hmmm, let’s see, blowing people up or feeding starving kids, which seems to be the right thing to do? Hmmmmm.

So what about the new flavor”? They call it “One Cheesecake Brownie”, and you know what? The strange combination actually tastes good! I had a healthy scoop of the colorful blend. It took me a lick or two in order adjust to the uniqueness, but after that, “look out stomach, bombs away!” ( no pun intended) :)

PS: AN IDEA FOR RAISING MONEY FOR THE HUNGRY (compliments of TechiMoto)

Research shows that B2C eCommerce totals in 2005 are likely to surpass USD 133 billion, depending on the research methodology used. How about if each time a on-line user is presented with the credit card payment form, he/she has the opportunity to add 5 cents to their total as a contribution to world hunger. If this option were taken by all making on-line purchases, this would add up to about $6.6 million a year. Not a bad idea Steve. I don’t think we can count on our government to change their hunger for war anytime soon, so it probably is up to us to take action. I know I’d be willing to kick in $.05 for each purchase for such a cause.

Thanks to reader Steve Rutherford, in Vista, CA. And, hey, I think Ben and Jerry are just the people to front this effort: I can’t think if any other people and organizations in this country that I would trust more.
